So do we bury our iPods six feet underground now? Not quite, but as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak mentioned, “the iPod would go the way of the transistor radio and Walkman, becoming a cheap and eventually boring commodity product.”
You see, the world has no use for single functioning devices anymore; they’re boring, and not even worth their price anymore since they only do one thing and nothing else (having games like parachute and music quiz don’t count). Today, it’s all about integration, innovation, inflation and…uhh…gesticulation! We want to hold a personal computer or a Mac in the palm of our hand. We love being able to surf for porn, text our mother’s and listen to the Styx all at once while riding the subway. The world is getting faster, more efficient, and so we demand immediate gratification more and more. So, for all you single functioning devices, take this is an ultimatum to either evolve into a multifunctioning piece of sexy hardware or die.
Ever since the introduction of the iPhone, it seems that Apple has “passed its mantle of innovation” to its latest creation, “…and that’s where the action’s going to be from now on–multifunction devices with interesting new interfaces.”
The same trend can also be seen in other electronic devices. Take a look at the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Not only can you play games, but you can also watch movies or television shows, surf the internet, listen to music, etc. Something tells me that this is all just the beginning, and that the future is “painted with colors that my ancient eyes cannot see.” I remember the Wall.E, when mankind is reduced to indolent fat turds who never even bother standing up, since they all have “multifunctioning” chairs. And so I can’t help but think that it’s life imitating art.

This guy is a maroon. The ipod is one of the most popular technologies sold in the world today and will remain so for years into the future. Do you think companies like Alpine, Pioneer, Bose, and others are going to pour tens of thousands into their own ipod related products with the idea that ipod will soon be dead? Get real.

To be perfectly honest I don’t use a good 2/3rds of the crap my phone came with. I have my Ipod that holds my music and my calendar, my book and my phone. I can’t imagine needing anything else. I think its fantastic that technology is moving so fast, but can’t it be moving in a more productive way? Do we really need complex hand held devices that just feed into our need to have flashy attention destroying object surround us, or I don’t know maybe use the knowledge to try and create artificial sound for the deaf or artificial vision for the blind?
