As if the 90’s rendition of the horrible, gut twisting, ridiculously casted Jean Claude Van Dame (’nuff said) Street Fighter movie wasn’t enough to ban the franchise in Hollywood, a new cast gets ready for another round of legendary video game blasphemy.
Said to be called Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, it has a release date set for next year (2009). Not much is revealed about the story or the particular period it is set in the Street Fighter universe, except that it’s going to revolve around Chun-Li’s (hence the title) vengeful quest to find the man who murdered her father, and with casting for characters such as Charlie Nash, we could expect the time line to be set in the Street Fighter Alpha period.
A whole roster still hasn’t been revealed but talks have pointed to a few such as Chris Klein (Charlie Nash), Kristin Kreuk (Chun-Li), Michael Clark Duncan (Balrog), Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas (Vega), Neal McDonough (M.Bison) and Robin Shou (Gen “rumoured”).
I apologize if i may sound just a little bit skeptical about this upcoming film. Though the cast may warrant some credibility and may give us hope that this film might have a chance to redeem the relationship between video games and movies, I still am traumatized by the past. All I can hear when I think of a live action Street Fighter is that horrible speech: “Now who wants to go home, and who wants to come with me!“–classic.
