This news has been spreading in the internet since March and it might not be too long since Google usurps one of the widely-used social bookmarking site Digg for $200 million bucks. Digg will become the new portal for Google news, destroying the cultural freedom that its usersa enjoy. According to Digg CEO Jay Adelson the negotiations between the two companies continued, although Marisa Mayer from Google reportedly stepped back on the company for a period of time. But I guess there’s no more cha-cha for these guys.
If there’s one thing Google needs right now, it’s not some social bookmarking site; but it does need to plow away advertising ventures of competitors. Most of Digg’s revenue came from a 3-year advertising contract deal with Microsoft, which will be terminated if Digg fell for the $200 million. Google doesn’t need any sources of traffic from Digg, everyone in the world who uses a computer is probably Googling 5-10 times a day. Lazy students who need to cram a school paper has Google to thank for, much to the dismay of the lonely books kept in the shadowy isles of the library. Bottomline: Google doesn’t need Digg, Google wants it. It’s like watching a conceited celebrity buying away all the beautiful dresses in a store, just so no one else will have anything pretty.
Maybe the reason behind this impulse buying is that Google wants to acquire some sense of humor. And besides, recent Digg entries are late and not that hot anyway, unlike those in Reddit.I even found an entry about Google buying the site, and it has only been dugg 2 times. Looks like they don’t want their new users to discover that they’re selling out. Earth to Digg: $200 million is pretty cheap money for a site as successful and big. Digg claims to be the Rolls Royce of social bookmarking, and it’s like they just sold themselves for a price a second hand beat-up Toyota would amount.
