Most teenagers have that phase of grouping themselves in a garage to form a band in hopes of breaking in to the music industry, no matter how bleak the chances are. A budding band faces the challenge of setting itself apart from a myriad of other talented, charismatic musicians. Luckily, with some witty use of media, attention came in quick for four boys who are probably no different from other garage bands.
A Cursive Memory started out in no extraordinary way. Colin Baylen and Shaun Profeta, who now both sings and plays guitar for the band, met at an eighth grade party and started to jam since then. Brian Boylen joined in to make a trio, and finally Mark Borst-Smith entered with the bass and keyboards. Just before they were to sign up for Vagrant Records, Brian leaves the band to be replaced by Dillan Wheeler. With their debut album out, entitled Changes, the four are busy rocking out on several stages including the much awaited Warped Tour on July.
This fresh set of music loving teenagers is, as I’ve mentioned, not so different from other aspiring bands. Their music is basically pop rock, nothing unusually better than the tunes of the bands that they used to cover – Jimmy Eat World and Blink-182. What makes people curious about this band is their genius idea for a music video.
With one camera and the countless open streets of Hollywood, they were able to include some of the most famous celebrities in their video without paying them a cent. This summed up to a funny, entertaining and star-studded music video. While other musicians are busting their heads thinking of ways to have a split-second cameo appearance from a famous star, A Cursive Memory simply followed the paparazzi around, and as expected, they were led to Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Will I Am, P. Diddy, Paris Hilton etc. Like the typical paparazzo, they were able to shoot celebrities before they board their cars, leave some bar or while taking a walk. What made this video even more entertaining is that they did not forget to film themselves beside the unsuspecting celebrity. The video shows the vocalist singing in the middle of a paparazzi crowd while Britney was being candidly hassled by other photographers in the background.
The boys are brave enough to make this video, not minding possible lawsuits. Fortunately, they received nothing but good and fun feedback from fans. Why would anyone sue them anyway? In the video itself, the celebrities themselves were obviously having fun being filmed. The band was even able to get some footage right beside the celebrities, seeming that the stars agreed to be filmed for the video. Others who have gotten footage of celebrities candidly received lawsuits; the most famous would be Sascha Baron Cohen of Borat. But far from this famous satirical film, A Cursive Memory has no political implications or racist platforms. The video is simply a fun one. The musicians cannot be sued because they did not invade privacy nor slaughter anyone’s good name. The video was mere fun and there should be no lawsuits on their way.
Their music may not be one of a kind, but their music video for their single Everything is. Few may have pulled it off without any lawsuits on the way, but the band just proved to be a group of fun-loving kids who have nothing harmful against the stars they included in the video.
