The 17′th Mtv Movie awards has announced its list of colorful nominees: movies with characters ranging from of socially challenged sex-obsessed highschool nerds and a pregnant teen; to a universally-desolated man and a kid who owns a killer robot car. This year’s most exciting awards night will be aired live on June 1, Sunday.
Mc Lovin’, his fake I.D., and the two sexually challenged bestfriends of Superbad bagged the most nominations: one for Best Movie, Best Comedic Performance, and three spots for the movie’s party boy trio in the Best Newcomer category. Arrested Evelopment and Superbad lead Michel Cera also nabbed a Best Male Performance for his role in hit indie flick Juno which also scored a bagful of nominees. Hopeful to recieve the iconic Mtv golden popcorn, Diablo Cody’s oscar-winning screenplay is also up for Best Movie, Best Female performance for Ellen Page and Best Kiss for Cera and Page’s lame smooch at the end. Rounding up the nominees for Best Movie are hits I Am Legend, Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End, National Treasure: The Book of Secrets and last year’s winner of Best Movie You Haven’t Seen Yet category, Transformers.
Hollywood favorite Johnny Depp is nominated for Best Comedic Performance for his Keith Richard-esque portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow, an eccentric upscale contender among the others who join him in the category. Comedian and Mtv Movie Awards mainstay Adam Sandler is nominated as well for his role in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen for Knocked-Up, and actress Amy Adams. Adams, also up for a Best Female Performance award is joined by Katherine Heigl for her role as an impregnated E! News anchor in Knocked-Up, and Jessica Biel. The opposite category of Best Male Performance is as flavorful with choices like Will Smith as the lonely combative scientist in I Am Legend; Matt Damon, and Michael Cera. Uprising hottie Shia LeBouf completes the list, not so surprising since he’s on a massive blockbuster streak.
The tame and meek Topher Grace, or Eric Forman in his popular That 70’s Show image is up for Best Villain for his tole as Venom in Spiderman. The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Denzel Washington, Javier Bordem and Grendel’s mommy in Beowulf Agelina Jolie joins the pool of enemies fighting for the popcorn. The award for best fight is rumbled upon by famous scenic fights like Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker vs. MingMing Sun in Rush Hour 3; the stun fight that took place all across the globe between Jumpers Hayden Christiansen and Jamie Bell; The comic-book combat of Tobey Maguire and James Franco in Spiderman 3; and Matt Damon’s rooftop fight with Joey Asah in The Bourne Ultimatum. All the fighting is accompanied with the heat of this year’s Best Kiss nominees that includes lip-locking perfornmances from Megan Fox and Shia in Transformers; Step Up 2’s Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman; Juno and Paulie Bleeker’s gentle peck and The Enchanted’s Amy Adams with Mcdreamy Patrick Dempsey.
One category that has been consistently the nation’s peephole for up and coming heavy hitters is the Best Breaktrough Performance, as past winners are now on a million dollar a week celebrity status. What makes this award extremely valuable because Mtv has the hippest market that covers the entire world, and they choose the winners. It’s like the coolest people in the world saying “hey dude, you’re sooo going to be it one day!” through the symbolic popcorn throphy. This year’s comoptition for that title is pretty fierce, with acts such as Shia LeBouf, Michael Cera, Megan Fox, Hairspray’s Nikki Blonsky, r&b superstar Chris Brown for his role in Last Christmas, and High School Musical hartthrob Zac Efron.
Mtv Movie Awards can be safely tagged as the coolest, most innovative awards night by consistently coming up with catchy and interesting categories that reflects Hollywood. Because of the current blockbuster explosion, the category Best Summer Film So Far is given birth and includes present films Speed Racer, Iron Man, Sex and the City, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Mike Myers will host the event while primetime mogul Mark Burnett will produce the edgiest, most exciting awards show of the season.
